英語の音声に関する雑記帳

John Wells の English Intonation: An Introduction (Cambridge University Press, 2006) の邦訳『英語のイントネーション』が研究社から出ました。発売当日に、Wells が Facebook で「出た！」と画像付きで、しかも日本語タイトルを何かのIMEを使って頑張って入力して書いていたものに、僕は場違いにも、次のようなことを書き込んでしまいました。

Actually, イントネーション (intonation) is also used in non-technical senses such as difference in pitch, (prosodic) accent, etc….

To be frank, the fact that you need a translatoin for this book, which is writting in such clear, easy English, shows the (low) level of proficiency among Japanese teachers of English. I doubt if they ever need a knowledge of intonation when they cannot read the book in English!

That said, congratulations for your first book to have been translated into another language!

最初の段落は、Wellsの友人で台湾に移り住んだ言語学者が、「音調」ではなくて「イントネーション」なの？という話をしていたので、個人的見解を述べたもの。最後の段落に関しては、音声学の本としては初めてながら、彼が書いたエスペラント語の本などは結構色々な言語に翻訳されているそうで、すみません、見落としてました…といったところです。

問題は、真ん中の段落。今思えば、著者が喜んでいるところに、よくこんなことを書けたなと思うのですが、Wells は冷静に、この話題を自分のブログの記事にしました。

著者としては本が売れれば嬉しいけど、実際のところ確かにそうだよね、という話です。

それで済んだと思っていたら、Jack Windsor Lewis がこの記事を取り上げて、ブログの記事を書いたのです。http://www.yek.me.uk/Blog.html#blog189 中でも、”I’m quite unable to remember any gross or important deviations from normal English patterns on the part of any of my Japanese contacts.” と書いているのはとても重要です。

Windsor Lewis には、僕が初めて Summer Course in English Phonetics に参加した1994年に直接教わる機会がありましたが、あの職人的厳しさに思わず身が引き締まったものです。LとRの発音の区別のうち、gl- vs gr- が怪しい（Rの方で唇を丸めて誤魔化している）ことまで指摘されてしまいました。自分では全く気がついていなかったので、参りました、と言うより他にありませんでしたね。（いや、最初はちょっと逆ギレしたかも知れません。）

でも、Wellsの記事に登場した Takehiko Makino が、あの時教えた僕のことだということは、さすがに覚えていないでしょうね…。

イントネーションの重要度に関しては、IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) の Pronunciation SIG のメーリングリストで、Jonathan Marks （English Pronunciation in Use: Elementary の著者）が、議論を沸騰させたくて、次のような命題を投げかけています。

1. There’s no agreement about what the significant features of intonation are, or what purposes they serve.
2. Intonation is unpredictable.
3. Intonation is subject to massive variation in different varieties of English.
4. Learners will pick it up, eventually, if they have enough exposure to English.
5. It doesn’t really matter, and trying to teach it is a waste of time.
6. Most people, including most teachers, can’t recognise intonation patterns – they can’t even distinguish between a fall and a rise.
7. Trying to teach intonation only confuses learners and does more harm than good.

いつも静かなメーリングリストなので、今回も大して議論にはなっていないのですが、これらの命題を全部潰して、「イントネーションは教える価値がある」と結論づけるには、慎重な議論が必要です。余裕があるときにこの雑記帳でも考えられればいいなと思います。もっとも、Windsor Lewis は、先のブログで、”The topic（イントネーションのこと）, then, is hugely less important for Japanese speakers than eg mastering the distinction between /l/ and /r/ that often persists even in the performance of Japanese advanced learners.” と断じていますけどね。
